The eternal conundrum of the Leaving Certificate student: how to balance the demands of studying for the most important exams of your life with the temptation to indulge in a spot of shoplifting. It’s a dilemma that has faced many a young scholar, and one that recently landed a Maynooth teenager in the hot seat at Naas District Court.
As the judge looked down at the young defendant, he couldn’t help but think that she had her priorities all wrong. Instead of focusing on her studies, she had been busy helping herself to goodies from the shops at Kildare Village. It’s a shopping mecca, to be sure, with its discounted designer duds and luxury lifestyle brands. But, as the judge pointed out, it’s not exactly the best place to go “shopping” if you don’t have the cash to pay for it.
The court heard that the young lady in question had been caught red-handed, with a stash of stolen goods in her possession. And what was her excuse, you ask? Well, it seems she was just trying to take her mind off the stress of the Leaving Cert. Ah, the old “I was just trying to relax” defense. It’s a classic, to be sure, but not exactly the most convincing argument when you’re standing in front of a judge.
Now, we’re not here to judge (no pun intended). We’ve all been there, done that, and got the t-shirt (which, in this case, was probably stolen from one of the shops at Kildare Village). But seriously, the Leaving Cert can be a stressful time, and it’s understandable that students might look for ways to blow off steam. However, shoplifting is not exactly the most advisable way to do it.
As the judge pointed out, the young lady in question has her whole life ahead of her. She’s sitting the Leaving Cert, and presumably hopes to go on to college and make something of herself. And yet, here she is, with a criminal record and a reputation that’s been somewhat tarnished. It’s a shame, really, because with a bit of focus and determination, she could be achieving great things.
But, as the saying goes, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Or, in this case, when life gives you a court appearance, use it as a wake-up call. The judge, in his wisdom, told the young lady to concentrate on her exams and put the shoplifting incident behind her. And that’s sound advice, if you ask us.
After all, the Leaving Cert is a big deal. It’s the culmination of five years of hard work and dedication, and it can be a bit of a nerve-wracker. But with the right mindset and a bit of hard work, anyone can succeed. And who knows, maybe this little incident will be just the kick in the pants our young heroine needs to get her priorities straight.
So, to all the Leaving Cert students out there, take heed. The exams may seem daunting, but they’re not the only thing that matters. Your future is what’s at stake, and it’s up to you to make the most of it. Don’t let a bit of stress and boredom get the better of you. Stay focused, stay motivated, and you’ll be grand.
And to the shops at Kildare Village, well, maybe it’s time to consider offering a “Leaving Cert discount” to students. After all, a bit of retail therapy can go a long way in reducing stress levels. Just kidding, of course. Shoplifting is never the answer, and we don’t condone it in any way. But a discount wouldn’t go amiss, would it?

As for our young heroine, well, let’s hope she takes the judge’s advice to heart and concentrates on her exams. With a bit of hard work and determination, she’ll be just fine. And who knows, maybe one day she’ll be back at Kildare Village, shopping till she drops – with her own money, of course. Ah, the circle of life.
