The State of Our Hospitals: A Right Ol’ Mess, But Naas is Holdin’ Its Own
Ah, the Irish healthcare system – a topic that’s guaranteed to get the blood boilin’ and the jokes flowin’! But, in all seriousness, the state of our hospitals is no laughin’ matter. As I sit down to write this article, I’m lookin’ at a picture of Naas Hospital, with a sign that reads like a bad joke: "Welcome to Naas Hospital, where the waitin’ room is just the beginnin’!"
According to the latest figures, there were eight people on trolleys at Naas Hospital today, havin’ been admitted through the accident and emergency department. Now, I know what you’re thinkin’: "Eight people on trolleys? That’s not so bad, is it?" And, in fairness, compared to some of the other hospitals in the eastern region, Naas is lookin’ like a beacon of efficiency. In fact, it’s the second least overcrowded facility in the area, with some of its neighbors havin’queue’s that’d put the Black Friday sales to shame.
But, let’s not get too carried away with the celebratory pints just yet. Eight people on trolleys is still eight too many. And, when you consider the fact that these poor souls are stuck in a limbo of sorts, waitin’ for a bed to become available, it’s enough to make your heart go out to ’em.
Now, I’m no expert, but I’ve had my fair share of experience with the Irish healthcare system. And, let me tell you, it’s a right ol’ mess. The Accident and Emergency department is like the Wild West – you never know what’s goin’ to happen next, or how long you’ll be waitin’ for a doctor to see you. And, don’t even get me started on the trolleys. I mean, what’s the point of havin’ a fancy new hospital if you’re just goin’ to stick people on trolleys in the corridor like they’re waitin’ for a bus?
But, in fairness to Naas Hospital, they seem to be doin’ their best with the resources they have. And, when you consider the fact that the hospital is servin’ a population of over 200,000 people, it’s a wonder they’re managin’ to keep their heads above water at all.
Of course, the overcrowdin’ in our hospitals is just one symptom of a much larger problem. The fact is, our healthcare system is creakin’ under the strain of years of underfunding and neglect. We’ve got a shortage of doctors, nurses, and beds, and it’s a wonder we’re not seein’ more people on trolleys.
So, what’s the solution? Well, for starters, we need to get serious about investin’ in our healthcare system. That means more funding, more staff, and more beds. And, it means gettin’ creative about how we use the resources we have. Maybe it’s time to start thinkin’ outside the box, and lookin’ at some of the innovative solutions that other countries are usin’ to tackle the same problems.
In the meantime, let’s all take a deep breath and try to be patient. After all, as the great Irish philosopher, Oscar Wilde, once said: "To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance." And, let’s be honest, when you’re stuck on a trolley in the corridor of a hospital, you need all the love you can get!
But, in all seriousness, the state of our hospitals is a serious issue, and one that we need to tackle head-on. So, let’s keep the pressure on our politicians, and demand better for our healthcare system. We deserve it, and so do the hard-workin’ doctors, nurses, and staff who are doin’ their best to keep our hospitals runnin’ smoothly.
And, who knows, maybe one day we’ll have a healthcare system that’s the envy of the world. A system where you can walk into a hospital and get the care you need, without havin’ to wait for hours on a trolley. A system where the staff are well-funded, well-staffed, and well-supported. It’s a nice dream, anyway.
Until then, let’s just keep on keepin’ on, and hope that our hospitals can keep their heads above water. And, to the eight people on trolleys at Naas Hospital today, I say: hang in there, folks. Help is on the way, and it won’t be long before you’re back on your feet and out of that hospital in no time.

On a more positive note, it’s great to see that the Kildare Tidy Towns group is out there doin’ their thing, and makin’ our community a better place to live. And, who knows, maybe one day we’ll have a healthcare system that’s as tidy and well-run as the town of Naas itself.
