The Price of a Stamp Just Went Up, and We’re Feeling a Wee Bit Mugged
Ah, the humble stamp. A staple of Irish life, and a necessity for anyone who still believes in the art of handwritten letters (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t love getting a surprise in the post?). But, alas, the price of a national stamp is set to increase, and we’re not exactly thrilled about it. An Post, the beloved institution that brings us our daily dose of bills and junk mail, has confirmed that the cost of a stamp will rise from €1.65 to €1.85, a whopping 20c increase. Ouch, that’s a bit of a kick in the teeth, if you ask us.
Now, we know what you’re thinking: "What’s the big deal? It’s only 20c." But, me boyo, it all adds up. Think about it, if you’re sending a few letters a week, that’s an extra €1 or so per week, which might not seem like a lot, but it’s enough to buy a decent cup of coffee (or a pint, depending on your priorities). And let’s not forget, this increase is coming at a time when the cost of living is already through the roof. It’s like the old saying goes: "When it rains, it pours," and right now, it’s pouring pennies out of our pockets.
But, as they say, "needs must," and An Post claims that the price hike is necessary to keep up with the times. The company says that the increase will take effect from Tuesday, February 3, so mark that date in your diary, folks. We’re not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that the price of a stamp is going up or that An Post is giving us a whole month’s notice. It’s like they’re trying to soften the blow, saying, "Ah, don’t worry, lads and lasses, you’ve got plenty of time to stock up on stamps before the price goes up." Fair play to them, we suppose.
Now, we’re not ones to complain (much), but this increase does seem a bit steep. We mean, what’s next? Will the price of a pint of Guinness go up to €10? (Please, for the love of all things holy, say it ain’t so.) The thing is, we understand that prices rise, and we’re not naive to the fact that An Post has to keep up with inflation and whatnot. But, still, it’s hard not to feel a wee bit mugged when the price of something as essential as a stamp goes up.
And what about the poor souls who rely on stamps for their business? The small entrepreneurs, the market stall owners, the granny who loves to send letters to her grandkids? This increase could have a real impact on their bottom line. We’re not saying that An Post is being cruel or heartless, but perhaps they could have considered a more… shall we say, "gradual" increase? A few cent here, a few cent there, and we might not have noticed. But 20c all at once? That’s a bit of a shock to the system.
But, as the great Irish philosopher, Dermot Morgan, once said, "That’s life, isn’t it?" And we suppose he’s right. We’ll just have to grin and bear it, and hope that the extra 20c will be put to good use. Maybe An Post will use it to improve their services, or perhaps they’ll invest in some fancy new stamp-making machinery. Who knows? All we can do is speculate and hope for the best.
In the meantime, we’ll just have to get used to the new price of a stamp. It’s not the end of the world, after all. We’ll still send our letters, and we’ll still enjoy the simple pleasure of receiving a handwritten note in the post. And who knows, maybe this increase will encourage us to be more mindful of our stamp usage. Perhaps we’ll start using email more, or (heaven forbid) actually pick up the phone to talk to people. The possibilities are endless, and we’re sure that we’ll find a way to adapt.
So, there you have it, folks. The price of a stamp is going up, and we’re not exactly over the moon about it. But, as we say in Ireland, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Or, in this case, when life gives you a price increase, just shrug and say, "Ah, sure, what’s the difference?" After all, as the great Irish saying goes, "May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night, and the road downhill all the way to your door."
