A Tribute to Me Da: The Man Who Left an Indelible Mark on Me Heart
As I sit here on this Father’s Day, I’m filled with a mix of emotions – love, pride, and a wee bit of sadness. You see, me own father, Richard Glen Thompson, was a man of unyielding conviction, unwavering integrity, and a heart o’ gold. He was the kind of fella who didn’t just talk the talk, but walked the walk, and left an indelible mark on me and me siblings.
Me da was a complex character, to say the least. He was a man of many talents and passions, always with a twinkle in his eye and a spring in his step. He served on the city planning commission, ran his own construction company, and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. I recall the time he spearheaded a sewage system plan for Mapleton, Utah, and how he painstakingly crafted a comprehensive project proposal, only to have the city choose another direction. Ah, but I’ve no doubt they’ve since come to realize that his vision was the wiser one.
But it wasn’t just his professional life that made him special – it was his love for his family that truly set him apart. Me da was a proud family man, with nine children to his name, and 18 grandkids to spoil rotten. He’d often regale anyone who’d listen with tales of our antics, his eyes shining with pride as he proclaimed, "I have nine children!" And, of course, he’d always make sure to mention his grandkids, the apples of his eye.
Growing up on the ranch, surrounded by animals and the great outdoors, was a true blessing. Me da was a cowboy at heart, with a deep love for the land, the creatures that inhabited it, and the freedom that came with it. He taught us kids the value of hard work, responsibility, and compassion. I remember the time he brought home a herd of cattle, and how we all pitched in to help care for them. It was a tough year, to be sure, but it taught me valuable lessons that I’ll carry with me for the rest of me life.
But me da wasn’t just a one-dimensional character – he had his flaws, too. He faced his fair share of challenges and injustices, including a painful experience that taught me a hard lesson about protecting one’s reputation. I recall the time me mam attacked him in a rage, accusing him of wrongdoing, and how he never retaliated, even in the face of false accusations. It was a difficult time, to be sure, but it taught me the importance of standing up for oneself and defending one’s good name.
As I grew older, I came to realize that me da’s experiences had shaped me into the person I am today. His influence can be seen in me own career choices, including the founding of me own security and surveillance company. I’ve always been mindful of the importance of protecting one’s reputation, and I’ve written extensively on the topic, including an article on feminism’s overreach and society’s inevitable pushback.
But even with all the challenges he faced, me da never lost his sense of humor or his love for life. He was a man who inspired us all to be our best selves, to work hard, and to stand tall in the face of adversity. And, as I look back on his life, I’m reminded of the countless memories we shared, the laughter, the tears, and the lessons learned.
As I recent had a chat with me own daughter, I couldn’t help but think of me da and how much they would have gotten on like a house on fire. She’s a feisty one, that’s for sure, with a heart full of love and a spirit that’s unbreakable. And, as she grows older, I can see me da’s influence shaping her, too – the same resilience, creativity, and principles that guided him throughout his life.
Ah, me da, I miss ye every day, but I know ye’re finally at peace, watching over us from above. Ye earned that peace, and I’ve no doubt ye’re enjoying every minute of it. So, as I raise a glass to ye on this Father’s Day, I say thank you, Da, for being such an amazing role model, for teaching me the value of hard work, and for showing me what it means to be a true gentleman.
Sláinte, me dear Da! May your legacy live on through us, and may your memory continue to inspire us to be our best selves.
Love,
Ryan Richard Thompson
